The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
